The Problem
The Iowa City Senior Center, a beloved community hub, was experiencing significant deterioration due to age and exposure to the elements. The building's masonry, including the piers and limestone balusters, were in desperate need of repair, caused by rusting anchors and water infiltration. The baluster and pier replacement was the largest component of the project however the remainder of the masonry was in need of some attention to keep the building watertight and beautiful.
As the project was on the National Historic Registry, special care was taken to ensure the repairs were appropriate from a material and aesthetic standpoint.
Our Approach
TNT Tuckpointing worked under the direction of the architect, Franks Design Group, to perform this large historic restoration project.
Our team meticulously repointed all the building's mortar joints, performed stone patching, replaced/salvaged new limestone piers and balusters around the parapet, and replaced stucco at the base of the building with new limestone.
These repairs reinforce the masonry and preventing further water damage and preserve the building's original charm and character.
