The Team Behind the Award Winning Iowa City Senior Center Project

It's not often that "public bid project" and "award-winning" end up in the same sentence. This month, they did.
The Iowa City Senior Center was recognized by the Iowa City Historical Preservation Commission with a Historic Preservation Award for Institutional Rehabilitation. And we wrapped the work five months ahead of schedule.
I want to be clear about something: this wasn't a TNT win. It was a team win.
Public bid work is hard. Low bid drives the decision, which means the margin for collaboration — for doing the right thing over the cheapest thing — can be thin. What made this project different was the team around the building. The City of Iowa City (Ben Clark, Shaun Bradbury), Franks Design Group (Pete Franks), and the Senior Center (LaTasha DeLoach) came to the table not just as owners and designers, but as stewards of the building.
Historic preservation is about more than tuckpointing and façade work. It's about honoring the fabric of the building — what it's been, what it is, and what it needs to be for the next generation of people who walk through the doors. That only happens when the owner, the architect, the inspector, and the contractor are all pulling in the same direction, with the building's future as the scorecard.
Our crew — Chris Snyder, Jason Burg, Ryan Flatley, and the full team — gave this project everything. But the award belongs to everyone who stood beside the building. A city that invested in its history. A design team that protected the integrity of the work. An owner who trusted us to get it right.
That's the kind of project we want more of. And it only happens when the team is right.
