Commercial Tuckpointing & Masonry Restoration in Washington, IA
Washington is the county seat of Washington County, and its downtown is built around the Washington County Courthouse and its clock tower. The square is ringed with historic brick commercial blocks, and the town has the churches and school buildings you'd expect in a southeast Iowa county seat.
That masonry faces a hard freeze-thaw cycle every winter, and the tallest, most exposed parts of a building take it first.
TNT Tuckpointing & Building Restoration is a masonry restoration specialist based in eastern Iowa. In 2026 we completed a full maintenance cycle on the Washington County Courthouse clock tower, our second round on that tower in more than ten years. If your Washington building is losing mortar, cracking or letting water in, we'll assess it and give you a clear scope and a real budget. Call (563) 785-0120.

Three Things That Define Washington Masonry
- A courthouse square. The courthouse and the historic blocks around it were built with soft lime mortar. They need matched mortar and historic restoration, not hard modern patching.
- Towers and high details. Clock towers, cornices and parapets take the most weather and are the hardest to reach. Sealant replacement, tuckpointing and water repellent on a schedule keep them out of restoration.
- Southeast Iowa freeze-thaw. Water in an open joint freezes, expands and opens it further every winter. A plant growing out of a joint means the damage is already well along.

Why Washington Chooses TNT Tuckpointing
We've worked in Washington. On the Washington County Courthouse clock tower we cleaned the masonry, tuckpointed about 345 square feet of joints, replaced about 668 linear feet of sealant, replaced 37 brick, made stone patches and applied a breathable water repellent. The work ran in the spring of 2026 with the courthouse open throughout.
Courthouses are familiar work. We've also restored the Jasper County Courthouse in Newton and repaired the Ida County Courthouse. Government buildings

Local insights in Washington
Maintenance on schedule costs less than restoration. We last worked on the courthouse tower more than ten years before the 2026 round. Sealant has a working life of about ten years, so the right plan for a tower like this is a ten-year cycle: sealant, open joints, cleaning and water repellent.
Use money you've already set aside. We walked the courthouse with the County in January and priced the work against funds already in that year's budget, so the job didn't need a new budget line.
Good patches disappear. The six stone patches on the clock tower were matched to the surrounding stone in color, texture and profile. In the finished photos you can't find them.
Where we work. We serve Washington, Kalona and Washington County, along with Iowa City and Muscatine.
