Lintel, brick, stone and sealant work at the historic Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo, Iowa.

Historic brick buildings on the Iowa Juvenile Home campus in Toledo, Iowa

Rust streaks below a window mean the steel lintel behind the brick is failing.

The Iowa Juvenile Home campus at 701 S. Church Street in Toledo is a group of historic brick buildings owned by the State of Iowa. When we got there, the warning signs were easy to read: rust stains running down the brick below the windows, and sealant at the window heads that had cracked and pulled away.

Rust staining on brick almost always means the steel lintel over the opening is corroding. As steel rusts it expands, and that growth pushes the brick above it out of line and cracks the joints. Patching around it doesn't fix anything. The lintel has to come out.

We replaced the failed lintels and the brick around them, repaired damaged stone, tuckpointed open joints, replaced the sealants and cleaned the masonry. Fixing the cause instead of the symptoms is what gives an old building another few decades of service.

This is the kind of work we do on public buildings across Iowa: lintel replacement, brick replacement, stone repair, tuckpointing, sealant replacement and building cleaning.
