The Problem
Henn Mansion is a multi-story historic structure located on the active campus of Maharishi International University. The building’s exterior brick wall—spanning two to three stories—had severely deteriorated and required a full reconstruction. TNT Tuckpointing was tasked with rebuilding multiple courses of masonry across the entire exterior wall. Adding to the complexity, the building remained partially occupied with active office space, necessitating careful attention to safety and minimal disruption throughout the project. Once demolition began, the team discovered significantly more structural deterioration than anticipated. Emergency structural shoring became necessary to stabilize the building, and the scope of the project more than doubled as a result.
Our Approach
To address the unexpected structural issues, TNT worked alongside a specialty contractor to install vertical shoring posts from the basement through the upper floors, providing crucial support while reconstruction was underway. Although occupants temporarily vacated their offices, the building remained partially in use, requiring diligent safety protocols and tight project coordination. TNT reconstructed the damaged wall using historically appropriate materials and techniques, preserving both the building’s integrity and its visual character. All work was completed in accordance with standards set by the National Historic Register to ensure the historic nature of Henn Mansion was fully respected and restored.
Project Impact & Results
The result was a full restoration of a nationally recognized historic structure, completed with authenticity and long-term durability in mind. The reconstructed exterior not only ensured the building's continued use but also preserved its original character. The project showcased TNT’s ability to manage unexpected challenges, coordinate with multiple stakeholders, and operate safely within an occupied and historically sensitive environment. Eight years after completion, the building remains in excellent condition—a testament to the quality and care invested in the work.
Key Takeaway (Insight)
Historic restoration requires far more than expert craftsmanship—it demands flexibility, transparency, and the technical precision to adapt as conditions change. At Henn Mansion, TNT Tuckpointing delivered on all fronts, preserving a registered historic landmark while ensuring it continues to serve its purpose for generations to come.
