The Problem

Fort Atkinson, a uniquely preserved 1840s military post located in northern Iowa, faced critical structural and preservation challenges after nearly 200 years of exposure to the elements. Many of its thick masonry walls had developed deep cracks, and in some cases, entire sections had begun to separate from the original buildings. This was not just a construction challenge—it was a historical one. Every repair and intervention had to maintain the site’s authenticity and historical integrity. As a state-managed property with public visitors year-round and oversight from the National Park Service, the project required a meticulous and historically sensitive approach to ensure safety, longevity, and educational value.

Our Approach

We began with a full condition assessment to identify the site’s most urgent structural needs. Prioritizing areas with the greatest risk, we collaborated with the Iowa DNR and preservation experts to create a restoration plan that respected the site’s historical authenticity. Original stones were carefully cataloged and rebuilt in place. To reinforce stability, we installed 40-inch grout-filled anchors and helical tie bars to address deep cracks, added discreet steel supports in weakened arches, and upgraded drainage systems to prevent future water damage. Mortar was matched through lab testing to blend seamlessly, and all cleaning and preservation methods were chosen for their gentleness and precision. Equipment routes were carefully mapped to protect archaeological zones.

Project Results

The project successfully restored structural integrity while preserving the historic character of Fort Atkinson. Cracks were closed, walls stabilized, and original materials reused wherever possible. The site remains open to the public with its authenticity intact, and continues to host educational programs and events like the annual Rendezvous Festival. The restoration not only extended the life of the buildings—it revitalized their role as a cultural and historical touchstone for future generations.
