Quick Tip: The "Freeze-Thaw" Check

The biggest threat to your masonry in December isn't the snow—it’s the ice. When water gets into small cracks in your brickwork or mortar and freezes, it expands. This creates a "freeze-thaw" cycle that can turn a tiny hairline crack into a major structural repair by springtime.
What to do this month:
- Clear the Drainage: Ensure your gutters and downspouts are clear. Redirecting water away from your walls prevents ice from building up against the masonry.
- Check the "Splash Zone": Inspect the bottom 2 feet of your exterior walls. If you see white, powdery staining (efflorescence), it means water is soaking into the brick.
- Avoid Harsh Salts: Never use standard rock salt (sodium chloride) on masonry steps or walkways. It eats away at the mortar. Use calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) or plain sand for traction instead.
Pro Tip: If you notice "spalling" (where the face of the brick is popping off), don't wait for summer. Cover the area with a tarp or plastic if possible to prevent further water ingress until a professional can tuckpoint the joints.
