Commercial Tuckpointing & Masonry Restoration in Clinton, IA

Clinton grew up on the Mississippi during the lumber boom of the late 1800s. That era left the city with brick and stone downtown blocks, churches and civic buildings, many now more than a century old. Today, large industrial plants along the river add a different kind of masonry to maintain.

‍

All of it faces river humidity, wind off the water and a hard freeze-thaw cycle every winter.

TNT Tuckpointing & Building Restoration is a masonry restoration specialist based in eastern Iowa. In 2026 we restored St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clinton, and in 2023 we completed work for YWCA Clinton. If your Clinton building is losing mortar, cracking or letting water in, we'll assess it and give you a clear scope and a real budget. Call (563) 785-0120.

Three Things That Define Clinton Masonry

  • Lumber-era brick and stone. Century-old downtown and church masonry was built with soft lime mortar. It needs matched mortar and historic restoration, not hard modern patching.
  • Churches, towers and parapets. The tallest, most exposed masonry fails first. Church gables, towers and parapets need careful access and tuckpointing, brick replacement or parapet rebuilding before damage spreads.
  • Industrial wear on the riverfront. Plants deal with vibration, exhaust and impact on top of the weather. Industrial masonry work is scheduled around production.

Why Clinton Chooses TNT Tuckpointing

We've worked in Clinton. At St. Paul Lutheran Church on South 3rd Street, our crews cleaned and tuckpointed the brick, replaced damaged brick and failed caulking, repainted the steel lintels and patched the entry steps, one elevation at a time. Much of it was done from lifts and scaffolding. In 2023 we also completed work for YWCA Clinton.

‍

Church work is familiar work. We've also rebuilt the collapsed bell tower at St. Michael Catholic Church. Our crews include FRACO-certified mast climber installers and instructors, and scaffolding safety instructors. Religious buildings

Local insights in Clinton

One overall plan, funded in phases. St. Paul Lutheran knew it had open mortar joints and needed brick replacement, and wanted an overall plan for repair. We priced the building elevation by elevation, so the church could approve the north side first and the rest as funds allowed.

‍

Cleaning comes before repair. At St. Paul Lutheran, the brick was cleaned with hot water as part of the job. Cleaning first shows the true condition of the joints and brick, so the repair scope is accurate.

‍

Patchwork repairs add up. Many older buildings have a century of spot repairs in different mortars. The Maquoketa Public Library, nearby in Jackson County, was one. A full repointing with one matched mortar fixes the wall instead of adding another patch.

‍

Grants can help. Historic and civic buildings may qualify for state grants or tax credits. The Maquoketa library's repointing was partly funded by a $30,000 state HRDP grant. Funding guide
